Over the years, one of my dearest friends and I have exchanged stories about the “gentle reminders” --“observant comments” -- “helpful suggestions” and “unsolicited reminders” from our mothers…..on everything from proper skin care to acceptable public behavior. For example:
“You’re actually going to go outside like that?”
“Honey…..that skirt is too short and too shear to wear in public.”
“Honey…don’t walk like a bear…….. when you walk…”rarrr, rarrrr, rarrr”. “Remember glide, glide, glide…femininely….like this” (where she would demonstrate the proper way for a “lady” to walk)
“Your friends say you look good in that because they don’t know what else to say”
“You know what they say…..Girls that carry extra weight….tend to have (fill in the symptom) more frequently than thin girls.”
“If you don’t loose weight…..you’ll never get married….and you’ll end up being 32 and single” “I am not sure the sleeves on your Prom dress are accomplishing what you had hoped for.”
My friend and I have discussed for years, the opportunity to publish a book together. We’ve had visions of making gazillions….all the while saving the relationships of millions and millions of mothers and daughters. We’ve discussed various titles…including:
"Mom, Seriously…..Did You Just Say that Out Loud?"
"What Not To Say to Your 20 Something Year Old Daughter"
"What NEVER To Say to Your 30 Something Year Old Daughter"
"10,000 things Mothers of Single Daughters Should Know and Avoid Saying, Doing or even Insinuating at All Times and in ALL things and in ALL Places."
"If Talent Were Pizza, You’d be A Supreme…..Can You Make that with low-fat Mozzarella Please?"
“No MOM! A Tall Glass of Ice Water and a Half a Grapefruit Doesn’t Do the Trick!”
Well……THE BOOK DEAL IS ON HOLD! And I’ll tell you why……our moms were right! Of course they're right…..they’re moms……..and I have pictures to prove it!
This is a picture of my friend and I in 1990. We were at girls camp…..and we thought we looked pretty cute! Yes…I am wearing boxers as shorts. And yes...they are too short and too shear!
Here we are pictured in our Senor Prom Dresses. Once again.... mom was right……not sure the sleeves accomplished what I had hoped for!
And here we are this past August…..still single……at 32.....making both of our moms right.....AGAIN! Hopefully at 32......we're a little older...a little wiser.....and realize that our moms just wanted the best for us all along! Thanks Moms......and sleep easy...the book deals off! (Unless you provide more titles in the future for best selling books!)

I love it! Old pictures of Amy and Lisa are my favorite!!! I miss you! When are you coming to Texas? Come soon k! Millie/Gabrielle!
I love the semi-Flock of Seagulls hairdo you sported at Prom! Between that and the puffy pirate sleeves on your dress...whatever made you change your look? If you woulda kept it, you'd be married by now. Love, East Coast Karen
Karen....do you really think I should reconsider the "Flock of Seagulls/Dorathy Hammil" haircut? I don't want to go cutting my long lock in hopes of landing myself a man....only to find that I look like a gay man, again! And remember I didn't have the three "lucky" wiskers when I was 17! I don't have a lot to work with here.
PS....did you like how I quoted one of your songs on my blog? ("Rainy days and these guys always get me down.") Ladies and gentleman......"East Coast Karen" is actually the celebrated KAREN CARPENTER! (Not to be confused with Tina Yothers or the girl from Growing Pains.)
Great. My cover is blown. Next the stake president will be knocking on my door to have a talk with me about my affiliation with certain "groups"...
It's so on- you threw down the Tina Yothers gauntlet. Prepare yourself. (For what I don't know.)
Karen
