After wearing jeans and/or shorts with an “Aloha shirt” and flip flops or my “man costume” (black pants, slip & oil resistant shoes with an “Aloha shirt” to work, every day for over two years…..I haven’t been exactly sure what I should wear to work at my new job. At Rumbi……I invented dress up days…like “Formal Fridays” so I could occasionally wear something a little fancier to work and doll up a bit……But I haven’t been completely clear on what a “Director of Marketing” should be wearing to work.
As I reviewed the “Directors of Marketing” that I have known in previous jobs (both of them) I remember them dressing….for lack of better words……a little sluttie! You know……tight, low cut tops, short skirts or tight pants and some really high healed-uncomfortable looking shoes…. like the girls wear on MTV. I’ve been a little stressed about what I would wear….. if, II am to me taken seriously in this new role! I wonder WWNS? (What would Nan say?)
Today I had my first “out of office” meeting. I had an appointment to meet with a group in the BYU Advertising Department. Folks….it’s official…according to the looks and stairs I received on campus……..I now dress kind of sluttie….and have officially qualified myself for the “Director of Marketing” title I have been given in my new job…..if for no other reason…..by the way I now dress!!! I couldn’t believe the looks I was getting! I even had a real nice gal stop and say….. “Are you lost….can I help you find something”….as though my wardrobe said I didn’t belong on campus. It actually made me feel a little uncomfortable…..so when I spotted a companionship of sister missionaries…..I followed them real close. (See photo below…..GOSH I love my new CAMERA PHONE!) At least the nice kids on campus would just assume I was an investigator….and would reserve their un-approving glances!
You may be wondering what I was wearing……..all I can say is that it’s amazing what a pair of “Hooker Boots” (as my niece Lauren likes to call them) can do for any outfit…..oh…..and maybe the black lace on the trim of shirt I was wearing! (WWNS?)
I thought that maybe it was just the time of day that I strutted my way to the Brimhall building….. but then….. when I had to walk back to my car….via the center of Campus (including a stop at the Wilk for some sour-patch kids)….I got the same looks! So……using my camera phone…..I took a picture of my reflection in the window….so that I could take a survey as to whether I merited the looks I was receiving…… (unfortunately…it’s probably not clear enough for anyone to judge)
So…for tonight….I will rest easy….knowing that the former “Directors of Marketing” that I have worked with would find me completely worthy of my new title. (Until one of my CA or DC friends comments that I look more like a character from Little House on the Prairie than the sluttie “Moe-Hoe” I thought I was! AND that the glances came because I was so dang old and should have been home….spending time with my grandkids! )
